The Pre-Masters in Business and Management at Bangor University International College is designed for students who do not yet meet the direct entry requirements for a postgraduate degree at Bangor University. Course modules
This module prepares students for postgraduate study by developing English language and academic skills for master’s-level work. It builds on existing abilities through engagement with complex academic texts, summarising key ideas and understanding different text types and purposes. This module develops academic English and study skills for postgraduate study. It focuses on understanding complex academic texts, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary, and applying critical thinking to evaluate sources and arguments. In this module you will learn how to distinguish between micro- and macro-economics and between positive and normative economics. The module considers key elements of both micro- and macro-economics and relates them to the experiences of entrepreneurs and their businesses. Theories, models and systems are considered and their impact on the business community are compared. The impact of national economic policies is examined but consideration is also given to wider economic groupings such as the European Union and to the impact of the globalisation of business organisations and activities. You will examine the concepts and principles underlying key financial decisions, risk and return, the evaluation of projected capital investment and analysis of financial performance, for example. The module further offers insights into the nature of the financial instruments, financial markets and financial intermediaries, with particular focus on the banking business. In this module you will develop an understanding of key concepts, recent developments and issues within the study of strategic decision making within business organisations with an emphasis on a critically evaluative approach to outcomes. You are also introduced to the theories and concepts of marketing as a business function and will relate theory to practice in terms of setting a company’s marketing objectives, formulating and implementing a marketing strategy, sales and promotional activities, market research and the impact of technology on marketing activities. This module introduces the role of information and data in business, with a focus on managerial decision-making. It develops skills in collecting, organising and analysing data, including the use of spreadsheets, charts and graphs. The module also covers probability, sampling and estimation, supporting the use of data to make informed decisions in areas such as pricing, marketing and product planning. You will be made aware of the major accounting concepts and of how financial statements are used to support companies in their measurement of profit and valuation of assets and in their planning for future strategic moves and developments. This module focuses on the techniques of management accounting that are used to collect, process, and present financial and quantitative data within an organisation to aid performance management, cost control, planning and pricing and, through these, the process of managerial decision making. It focuses on skills that support successful progression, including effective use of academic sources, digital platforms and the virtual learning environment.
