Course Overview

International Year One allows students to take credited SF State General Education courses alongside additional academic and English language instruction. The carefully curated credited course options allow first-year students to both discover new fields and further explore already strong subjects. Once International Year One is completed, students proceed directly to their second year of degree study at SF State.

The courses within the College of Ethnic Studies provide a unique educational experience by presenting a curriculum that places a strong emphasis on the historical and philosophical impact of African American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander, and Latina/Latino peoples and their many varied contributions to the history and culture of the United States. San Francisco State University’s most recent accreditation report praised the College of Ethnic Studies as a national leader in the development of scholarship on race and ethnicity.
