Course Overview
The International Stage One (IS1) in Business and Economics provides a strong foundation in the key principles of business, economics, law, and management. You will also build essential mathematics skills that are vital for understanding accounting and financial practices.
Equivalent to the first year of a four-year Scottish undergraduate degree, this pathway is designed to strengthen your academic knowledge and study skills while helping you improve your English for academic purposes. You will study across three terms at International College Dundee and, upon successful completion, you will progress directly to the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Course modules
This module looks at business structure and the impact of internal and external factors on business growth and development and introduces approaches to management and leadership. nThe module considers the ways in which businesses have impacted on society and the environment and the need for businesses to behave in an ethical and sustainable way as well as respond to change and innovation. nnMarketing is used as a context for exploring the ways in which businesses respond to the market and the need for strategic planning.
The module provides an introduction to the study of International Relations, includes some historical and theoretical background to current world problems and looks at the concept of globalisation, considering supra-national organisations and the influence of multi-national companies. nnThere is consideration of key concepts in the relations of states such as sovereignty, the nation state and national self-interest, the notions of the ‘balance of power’ and of hegemony. The historical origins of the field of study are studied through the development of the theoretical framework underpinning it. nnThe consideration of the inter-play between conflict and co-operation between states and responses to current problems are reviewed as are the economic aspects of globalisation and the relations of States and companies with global organisations and businesses.
This module focuses on the techniques of management accounting that are used to collect, process, and present financial information for managerial decision-making. It also demonstrates the use of accounting information in the broad areas of cost ascertainment, planning and control and decision making viewed from a performance management perspective.
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the basic mechanics and processes of financial accounting in both theory and practice and so prepare them for the later years of their degree studies in Business Management and Accounting and Finance. It additionally aims to help students understand the importance of financial accounting procedures in running a business efficiently and cost-effectively
This module provides a foundation in economic theory with a focus on decision-making by individuals and businesses. It covers demand and supply, price mechanisms, elasticity, productivity, market structures, labour markets and market failure, as well as public and private goods. The module helps students understand how prices are set, how firms and markets operate, when markets may be inefficient, and why governments may regulate industries or provide services such as health and education.
This module adds to the students’ knowledge of economic theory by introducing them to Macroeconomics, considering differing ways that the economy may be modelled and showing how theory is translated into practice in the management of the economy. nnStudents study a basic model of the economy starting with the closed economy model that investigates the links between investment, government spending, taxation and consumption on the occurrence of unemployment and then progressing to the open economy model which also looks at the influence of international trade. nnThe module also considers government reaction to the economic crisis of 2008 and the measures taken to affect its impact on the economy and work towards recovery. nnThe module also looks at the drive for economic growth and the role played by fiscal and monetary, demand and supply-side policies and considers the constraints on government freedom of action, including currently membership of the EU, and interaction with other economies and the influence of multi-national companies with the global economy.
This module provides an introduction to the role of a financial manager within a business and how investment decisions are taken within companies. Students are introduced to the ways in which businesses are financed and the core principles of financial management. The overriding aim is to provide knowledge and context for students seeking to continue onto the later stages of business-related degree programs.
This module provides a foundation in basic statistical knowledge and skills to support progression in undergraduate study. It covers summary statistics, probability, data visualisation and interpretation, the normal distribution, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing using t-tests and p-values. The module also focuses on interpreting data in context and applying statistical methods to problem-solving.
This module develops the mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills required for degree-level study, regardless of students’ backgrounds. It also supports the development of critical use of the Internet for research and introduces Blackboard and Turnitin for accessing course information, submitting work and communicating effectively.
This module explores current international issues affecting modern businesses and examines the role of business within society. It considers different economic and social systems around the world and how businesses respond to cultural differences, ethical challenges, sustainability concerns and technological change.
This academic English module aims to make students aware of the critical importance of English language proficiency and core academic competencies (skills and abilities) within a higher education context and provides English language preparation for continuing academic study on the later stages of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Dundee. nnThe module aims to raise students’ English language proficiency from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS/CEFR B2 to an IELTS level of 6.5/CEFR C1 or above.
This academic English module aims to make students aware of the critical importance of English language proficiency and core academic competencies (skills and abilities) within a higher education context and provides English language preparation for continuing academic study on the later stages of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Dundee. nnThe module aims to raise students’ English language proficiency from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS/CEFR B2 to an IELTS level of 6.5/CEFR C1 or above.
