International Year One in Engineering
at University of Greenwich
The International Year One (IY1) is the first stage of a three-year integrated degree and is studied over three terms before progressing to the university. It is ideal for international students who do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements. International Year One provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree.

This course aims to develop and strengthen your understanding of engineering and apply mechanical, electronic and mathematical principles in business.
This course is equivalent to your first year of degree study and will strengthen your knowledge of key engineering and technology principles.
This course will cover the major mathematical and scientific principles, which gives you a great headstart to engineering.
When you study engineering at the University of Greenwich, you will be taught at the university’s Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime, Kent. Here, students have access to industry-standard equipment and 3,000m2 of specialist laboratory space.

Course modules
The development of the English skills of international students joining the International Year Zero with the aim of achieving the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 for continuation onto the further levels of degree study at the University of Greenwich. Through this course the students are made aware of the critical importance of English competence in the context of their on-going academic studies. (30 credits)nnModule Code: ENGL1147
This course provides the students with a sound knowledge and command of mathematics with an emphasis on engineering applications. It comprises the well-recognised elements of classical engineering mathematics which universally underpin the formation of the professional engineer. The principal aim of this course is to bring students entering the first stage of an International Year One in Engineering up to a common standard in engineering mathematics. Therefore the course concentrates on; (a) understanding mathematical concepts associated with engineering applications (b) applying the mathematical skills and techniques to solve engineering problems. This course teaches the key elements of the design process and shows how design is an integrative subject that encompasses all disciplines of engineering. The student will experience collaborative and individual design from problem formulation through to manufacture of a product. The module will show how any modern engineer has to tackle a range of issues and produce cost-effective solutions while keeping a weather-eye on product life-cycle with a view to maintaining sustainability and avoiding irreversible environmental damage. This module seeks to provide consolidation of fundamental principles in electrical/electronic science together with a basic knowledge and understanding of common analogue and digital electronic devices. The emphasis, supported by laboratory experiments, will be to understand the operation of devices highlighting the practical use and application of these devices. This module combines theory and practice. The theory is taken care of through formal classes, whereas the laboratory sessions provides the opportunity to compare theory with practical live results. The aim of this module is to provide students with a clear understanding of the concepts of Mechanical Engineering. This is to be achieved through ensuring that the student gains an appropriate background in the principles of Mechanical Sciences and their uses in the solutions of engineering problems. The aim of this course is to introduce students to Engineering as a profession and to require them to think what this means in relation not only to the demands of the profession in terms of knowledge, skills and creative thinking, but also of how engineers work in terms of context, site or office environments both as individuals and as members of teams. The emphases will be on communication within an engineering/technical context, ethical working, aspects of the business environment and thinking about the students’ choice of career path.
