International Year Zero in Computing

The International Year Zero (IYZ) is the first year of a four-year integrated degree course. Your first year is taught at the college where you will gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English Language, before you continue to year one of your chosen undergraduate degree course.
Course Overview
This course aims to prepare you with a foundation of computer science knowledge and introduce you to various topics such as IT, communications and programming.
Our pathway course in computing introduces you to a wide range of IT, communications and research skills that will prepare you for more advanced study.
Further degree study at the University of Greenwich will help you gain professional skills in mobile application development, games design, programming, 3D modelling and animation. The University of Greenwich has a long-standing relationship with the British Computer Society (BCS), which accredits its computing degree programmes.

Course modules
This course acquaints students with the notion of an information system as a means of facilitating the collection, storage, organisation and communication of information typically in a management context. Students learn how computer software and networks support managers in the performance of their tasks often in relation to aiding business processes such as strategic planning, decision -making and measurement of performance. This course aims to provide students with a practical introduction to the technology and terminology around tabular data and construction and use of a database. It supports them in developing a database for a given situation, for example, a simulated business using current standards and appropriate software and enables the students to use a database to identify and solve problems within their simulated situation. The overall aim of the course is to provide students with a more advanced understanding of data processing and the construction and uses of databases to prepare them for level 4 and beyond on their Computing degree. This course aims to introduce students to the notion of problem solving through use of computer applications. It provides students with a basic understanding of algorithms and their uses and with additional experience of developing and using simple software programs to help solve particular problems. The overall aim of the course is to prepare students with a basic introduction to the techniques of data handling and processing and to the syntax of programming languages for their work on the later years of a Computing degree. In this course students are presented with a number of typical technical problems and issues which occur in real life situations. They include both technical and ethical issues and the students aim, with the support of their tutors, to identify and research possible solutions. The overall aim of the course, therefore, is to provide students with ‘hands on’ experience of the digital world and some of the issues raised within it. (10 credits)nnModule Code: COMP1795
This course aims to introduce students to the Hypertext Mark -up Language (HTML) used in the creation and display of pages on the World Wide Web. It provides a further introduction to the design and functionality of web pages and to the use of a programming language, JavaScript, to give added functionality to the web pages. Students also consider the uses of web pages as marketing collateral to draw attention to the products and services of a business and how web pages may be constructed and developed with this function in mind. This course enables students to enhance their basic IT skills in terms of use of preparation and use of documents and spreadsheets using Microsoft Office, presentation skills using PowerPoint. It further helps them both to develop the research skills through appropriate use of the Internet and to show them how using the VLE and social media can enable them to communicate effectively with their tutors and fellow students during their studies. The overall aim of this course is to enable students to apply data to work towards solutions of real -life problems in the contexts of their chosen field of further study. To achieve this, students are introduced to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods. The development of the English skills of international students joining the International Year Zero with the aim of achieving the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 for continuation onto the further levels of degree study at the University of Greenwich. This course aims to introduce students to the skills required to plan, research, prepare for, write up and deliver a project within their subject area. They have the opportunity to study all aspects of a project related to their particular field of study and to identify and develop a range of skills to enable them to realise the project, from the original concept, the research methods most suited to the topic chosen, the consideration of the problems involved in its implementation, the investigation of the project from a number of perspectives, including project design and management, social and environmental impact and sustainability (depending on the subject area) and reporting their findings both in written form and through a presentation.
