Course Overview

Sociology is the study of society, and the sociologist is equipped with the tools and skills required to understand how societies operate and how individuals can contribute to the building of good societies. Our BSc Sociology programme is carefully designed to develop those skills in our students to become good sociologists and good citizens, equipped with the skills to make positive social impact at work and in the world. Social justice is at the heart of sociological practice at Roehampton, and this degree programme connects with Roehampton’s theme of “social justice and inclusivity”. The programme incorporates the excellent research, knowledge exchange and impact activities of social scientists at Roehampton, including activism, the voluntary sector and business. This programme is innovative in how it incorporates research-led teaching through assessment, activities and community engagement so that research practice is entwined with the development of transferable skills and sociological knowledge. The degree addresses key issues in global society, including problems related to citizenship, human rights, digital cultures, gender and sexuality, homelessness, migration, the media and our identities. This degree programme also foregrounds the development of key skills and professional practice, drawing on the pioneering research of sociologists on the programme on citizenship, education and key skills.
