Course Overview
DMUIC offers a new way to start a prestigious Art and Design degree at DMU.
This is a practical course that includes creative work as well as theory. You will learn how to manage creative projects and prepare your portfolio. Whether you are going on to study fashion or architecture, you will learn the foundations needed for your chosen discipline.
Explore your creativity while creating a great portfolio – it’s the ideal way to start your degree studies in Art and Design as you continue to a world-class degree programme.
With specialist training, the Art and Design IFC gives you access to industry-standard workshops, the handling of materials such as wood, metal, plaster, plastics, ceramics and glass; as well as IT labs with Mac and PC platforms to learn digital design.
After you have completed your IFC at DMUIC, you will continue your studies in any number of our wide-ranging degrees, including Architecture, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Footwear Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Product Design. See below for a full list of continuation degrees.

Course modules
This module develops English language skills for study and life in the UK, aiming to raise proficiency from IELTS 5.5 to at least 6.0 (or 6.5 for some IYZ pathways). It focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking in an academic context and prepares students for undergraduate study at DMU. The module is skills-based and aligned with IELTS descriptors. This module supports the transition to British higher education, with a focus on studying at De Montfort University. It introduces key aspects of university life, services and facilities, alongside essential study skills. By the end of the module, students are able to engage effectively with the virtual learning environment, apply transferable study skills, reflect on their experiences through written and oral tasks, and demonstrate improved communication skills and awareness of the opportunities and challenges of university life at the University (12Credits) Module Code: LIPCF111
Students will explore different media through the use of 2D and 3D processes such as drawing, print, painting, collage etc. Students will use their reflective journal to record the workshop/studio processes and reflect on 2D and 3D techniques in their own work and the work of others. Students will be able to develop an ongoing critical understanding of contemporary, historical and cultural influences in which to inspire and inform their own practice. The students will also use this module to reflect and inform their choice of pathway and ultimately progression onto an undergraduate degree programme. (12Credits) Module Code: LIPCF003
This module is designed to help students create a portfolio of art work appropriate for progression to a degree programme at undergraduate level. (36Credits) Module Code: LIPCF055
This module is designed to give the students an introduction to the use of digital arts at the University. During this introduction students will get tuition in the use of the ICT Suite, Photography, the Adobe Suite and online digital software. Students will use these skills to develop a digital portfolio (website) related to their progression aspirations. (12Credits) Module Code: LIPCF006
In addition to your subject modules, you will also be required to take the module English for Academic Purposes (EAP). This module will be vital to your success as a student in British Higher Education as it will not only improve your English language skills, but also introduce you to the academic skills that are necessary for your university studies. Furthermore, you will engage in the Study Skills module ‘Introduction to DMU’.
