The Art and Design pathway at International College Dundee is an inspiring starting point for your creative degree and future career. It leads to a range of undergraduate programmes at the University of Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, one of the UK’s most respected art schools.
You will explore key concepts in art and design theory while developing your practical skills through studio-based projects. You will also study the foundations of psychology to help you understand human behaviour and apply this insight to your creative work. Course modules
This module is designed to help students create a portfolio of art or design work appropriate for continuation onto the later years of an appropriate degree programme at first degree level. nnStudents work in a variety of media developing or consolidating basic skills and a variety of techniques which will enable them to produce a portfolio of their own work, developed in response to the teaching they have received and the experiences they have had during the module, but the result of their own creativity and expressing their distinctive style and approach. nnAt the end of the module the work produced is displayed as part of a final show.
The module will look at a range of digital media and software in relation to the students’ progression aspirations and help the students explore their ideas through the use of this media. Students will not only gain practical skills in the conventional tools of digital art and design but will also be encouraged to explore the possibilities of digital media to enhance the potential of their work through experimental approaches. nnStudents will keep a record of the development of their work. They will be encouraged to adopt a reflective approach to developing a digital response by keeping an ongoing on-line journal/ blog of activity. This record will contribute to a digital portfolio. nnThroughout this module students will explore their own practice through the use of digital art/ design using a variety of media and techniques. They will come to understand that digital tools are now critical to not only most art and design subjects but also a key transferrable skill. Students will take from this module the tool kit needed to take advantage of an undergraduate programme. nnIn producing their digital portfolio during the module, students will be guided in their choice approach, methods and content by their own interests, be it in the world of art or design.
The emphasis in the module is on the study of Film and as mediators of cultural texts and practices which people receive and consume. This requires the student to learn and evaluate film and TV language, analyse the roles played by image, sound and music, sets and setting, and to understand the notion of genres and their conventions. nnStudents consider the way people’s lives are shaped in part by film and TV and how these media contribute to the way in which people, individually and collectively understand their past, present and future. nnStudents also consider the relationship between film and programme makers and their audience – audience positioning and targeting, audience reading and assumptions and the expectations of audiences themselves and look at the work of film and programme-makers in a wider cultural context.
The module introduces students to the historical background to their field of study through lectures and workshops on the history of art, design and the mass media and on-site or virtual study visits to major local and national museums and art galleries. These planned activities will inform the students about their own individual practice and provide context to be recorded in this module. nnThe study of context is key and students will keep a record of contextual links and visits in a logbook (contextual studies book) which will form the major element in assessing the module. Students will be expected to keep a record and develop a personal journey (reflective journal). The journal will provide the student with a record of processes, references and techniques used throughout the module. nn nnDuring their study, students will explore not only their own practice, but the work of earlier artists, designers and practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures in terms that they will come to understand using the visual and written language and oral traditions of others and analysing and synthesising relevant context. The module will challenge the students’ view of art, design and media, helping them to develop their own understanding within a contemporary setting.
This academic English module aims to make students aware of the critical importance of English language proficiency and core academic competencies (skills and abilities) within a higher education context and provides English language preparation for continuing academic study on the later stages of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Dundee. nnThe module aims to raise students’ English language proficiency from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS/CEFR B2 to an IELTS level of 6.5/CEFR C1 or above.
