Course Overview
An undergraduate degree in Computing provides you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design and develop a wide range of software systems. You will explore the fundamentals of computer science, programming principles, and algorithms, gaining a solid understanding of how technology shapes the modern world. Studying Computing opens doors to a variety of career paths, including software development, systems analysis, and information management.
The International Stage One (IS1) in Computing is equivalent to the first year of a four-year Scottish undergraduate degree. This programme is designed to help you build your subject knowledge and academic skills while also improving your English for academic study. Depending on your entry qualifications, you will study the IS1 across two or three terms. Upon successful completion, you will progress directly to the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee.

Course modules
To learn the theory and Java implementation of commonly used data structures in computing and to improve general programming skills by applying these data structures to solve problems.
This module develops the essential skills required to design and develop software, regardless of students’ backgrounds. It also builds the knowledge and confidence needed to apply learning in the later stages of the degree.
This module develops the mathematical knowledge most relevant to Computer Science, including the foundations of pure mathematics and logical thinking. It builds the ability to construct clear mathematical arguments and introduces the design of web applications for different purposes and user groups, as well as the fundamentals of the client–server relationship.
This module provides students from a range of backgrounds with the core skills needed to design and develop software, and prepares them for later stages of their degree. It introduces fundamental programming concepts such as data types, variables, objects, classes, methods, parameters, inheritance, arrays and file handling. The content is aligned with the Introduction to Software Development module offered in the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Dundee.
This module introduces the basic concepts of Unix-like operating systems and provides a broad understanding of computer networking technologies. It covers Unix principles, Bash scripting, network layer models such as OSI and TCP/IP, wired and wireless networks, and packet switching and routing. The module develops practical skills in using Unix tools and working in a Unix-like environment, alongside an understanding of network protocols used on the Internet and local area networks.
This module provides practical experience of web design through the implementation of core web technologies, preparing students for later stages of their degree. It covers the historical and social development of the web, HTML and semantic web elements, cascading style sheets and CSS libraries such as Bootstrap, alongside key design principles.
This module introduces the mathematics used in computer science and provides a strong foundation for later stages of a computing degree. It covers core topics including algebra, trigonometry and graphs; functions and calculus; linear algebra; optimisation; and probability and statistics.
This academic English module aims to make students aware of the critical importance of English language proficiency and core academic competencies (skills and abilities) within a higher education context and provides English language preparation for continuing academic study on the later stages of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Dundee. nnThe module aims to raise students’ English language proficiency from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS/CEFR B2 to an IELTS level of 6.5/CEFR C1 or above.
