The International Year Zero (IYZ) is the first year of a four-year integrated degree course. Your first year is taught at the college where you will gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English Language, before you continue to year one of your chosen undergraduate degree course.

This course aims to prepare you with a foundation of scientific knowledge and develop practical abilities such as core technical and research skills.

During this course, you will explore a range of subject matter from biology and chemistry to pharmaceutical sciences and forensic science.

Course modules
The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to post -High School Chemistry while giving them a stimulating learning experience in the basic theoretical principles of the subject. The module also aims to introduce students to laboratory practice and procedures with an emphasis on the need to work with regard to the safety of themselves and others Overall, the module aims to prepare students to move on to the first year and beyond of a science degree with the knowledge they will have gained. This course enables students to enhance their basic IT skills in terms of use of preparation and use of documents and spreadsheets using Microsoft Office, presentation skills using PowerPoint. It further helps them both to develop the research skills through appropriate use of the Internet and to show them how using the VLE and social media can enable them to communicate effectively with their tutors and fellow students during their studies. The overall aim of this course is to enable students to apply data to work towards solutions of real -life problems in the contexts of their chosen field of further study. To achieve this, students are introduced to basic statistical concepts, topics and methods. The development of the English skills of international students joining the International Year Zero with the aim of achieving the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 for continuation onto the further levels of degree study at the University of Greenwich. This course aims to introduce students from a range of backgrounds to the mathematical knowledge and aptitude that they will be expected to deploy and demonstrate in their degree studies. It ensures that students understand and can use appropriate mathematical language and understand mathematical notation, conventions and units and prepares them for the deployment of mathematical applications in science, engineering and computer science to assist in problem-solving. This course aims to introduce students to the skills required to plan, research, prepare for, write up and deliver a project within their subject area. They have the opportunity to study all aspects of a project related to their particular field of study and to identify and develop a range of skills to enable them to realise the project, from the original concept, the research methods most suited to the topic chosen, the consideration of the problems involved in its implementation, the investigation of the project from a number of perspectives, including project design and management, social and environmental impact and sustainability (depending on the subject area) and reporting their findings both in written form and through a presentation. The aim of this module is to build the students’ basic knowledge of biological topics in preparation for their studying furth er years of related degree subjects. It aims in particular to provide students with an introduction to the organisation and integration of physiological processes in nature but with a particular reference to animals and with an emphasis on mammalian, especially hu man, anatomy and physiology. Students consider the skeletal structure of humans, bone and muscle types and a number of physiological processes including the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems. The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to post -High School Biology and provide the basic knowledge for further degree study in the areas of biological studies. It aims further to provide students with an understanding of cell structure and function, how information flows through a cell and the basic principles of metabolism. Students also require to be introduced to laboratory practice and procedures with an emphasis on the need to work with regard to the safety of themselves and others The overall aim of the module is to prepare students to move to year 1 of a Life or Biomedical Sciences degree and deploy the knowledge they will have gained. The aim of this module is to develop further the basic principles of Chemistry, building on the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired in prior studies of the sciences. Its intention is to stimulate students’ appreciation of the social, environmental , economic and technological impact of Chemistry on the community. It also continues the students’ exposure to laboratory practice and procedures with a continuing emphasis on the need to work with regard to the safety of themselves and others. The overall aim of the module is to further prepare students for the deployment in the first year and beyond of a first degree in the Sciences of the knowledge and understanding which they will have gained.
