Course Overview
This course aims to broaden your skillset and understanding of modern-day business and management practices, focusing on strategy and implementation.
At the postgraduate level, the pre-master’s provides either one term (10 weeks) or two terms (20 weeks) of preparation for entry into a 1-year master’s degree in business and management.
Studying a master’s in business at the University of Greenwich will give you a grounding in business management and insight into business network analysis. Students are taught by an exceptional teaching team that includes accomplished lecturers and practitioners with vast experience in business network analysis, business management and strategy.
Course modules
The aims of the module are to build on the existing English language ability of international students to prepare them for study at master’s level at the University of Greenwich, in particular, to raise students’ measurable performance from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS to 6.0 IELTS or higher and to continue to increase linguistic competence and boost confidence in the use of English in the context of postgraduate studies. The approach of the module is to ensure that linguistic ability facilitates eventual successful engagement in academic modules at level 7, to introduce students to the advanced skills of critical thinking, evaluation of and creative engagement with study materials and to focus students on their need to develop as independent learners. The aims of the module are to introduce and develop English skills directly relevant to the academic study of Business through academic business investigation. It also aims to introduce and develop students’ understanding of basic business models. Students explore and interpret business source materials and use these and other learning materials to develop the practice of using business case studies to enhance their understanding of how business works in practice. The aims of the course are to introduce business students to economic theories and systems and relate these to the environment within which businesses function. Students will further be equipped with the critical skills to apply the concepts and principles they study to a business context, Students will be taught to consider the impact of government policies and actions on businesses and to look beyond national policies to the influence of wider economic and political groupings of states. The aim of the module is to introduce students to the structure, demands and expectations of postgraduate study of business in the UK. There is an emphasis on the development of academic skills of particular relevance to study at postgraduate level and students are introduced to learning strategies that will be of benefit with particular emphasis on the VLE and the role of IT and of the Internet and specialist sites and journals that may be accessed digitally. The main aim of this course is to develop a greater understanding of some of the key activities and functions associated with establishing and managing a business. The specific aims are: 1. To review the legal bases of different types of business 2. To consider the nature and impact of different styles of management/leadership 3. To introduce students to the fields of operations management and organisational behaviour including a detailed understanding of key developments within the area 4. The course covers common statistical techniques for managerial decision -making which are used in many businesses. The course offers a grounding in statistics with an emphasis on practical applications and extensive use of the Excel spreadsheet and its associated functions. The specific aims are: 1. To introduce students to the notion of the importance of mathematical techniques in the decision-making processes for managers 2. To emphasise the importance of effective presentation of statistical data in a business context 3. The main aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to corporate finance. They will examine the concepts and principles underlying key financial decisions. The module further offers insights into the nature of the financial instruments, financial markets and financial intermediaries, with particular focus on the banking sector. The main aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the strategic planning and implementation phases of the marketing process. They will examine the concepts and principles underlying the marketing function within business. Students will relate theory to practice in terms of setting a company’s marketing objectives, formulating and implementing a marketing strategy, sales and promotional activities, market research and the impact of technology on marketing activities. Theory is related firmly to practice through a number of case studies using international examples.
