International Year One in Computing
at University of Kent
The International Year One (IY1) is the first stage of a three-year integrated degree and is studied over three terms before progressing to the university. It is ideal for international students who do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements. International Year One provides an intensive combination of first-year university subject modules with extra study and English language skills. Upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree.

The International Year One in Computing enables you to understand various areas within the computing industry, opening up a wide range of career opportunities.
The International Year One (IY1) is the first year of a 3-year International Incorporated Bachelor’s (IIB).
Your first year is taught at the University of Kent International College (UK IC). Once you successfully complete this year, you will continue studying the remaining stages of your degree at the University of Kent.
During the three terms encapsulating the IY1, you’ll gain additional skills in your chosen study route and the necessary English language skills to succeed during your studies.

When we write software, it will eventually run on a computer system. How does this influence what software is and how software works? You’ll learn about the fundamental hardware and software components of a computer system, and how these components cooperate to execute software programs. You’ll deepen your knowledge of computer systems from the lowest level of abstractions in hardware to the highest level of abstractions of modern programming languages. For example, you will explore how logic circuits, machine language, programming language implementations, high-level languages build on one another to enable useful software applications. This will give you a deeper understanding of computers and enable you to develop high-quality software that considers the system perspective for instance in terms of cost of abstraction and performance implications. nnModule Code: KICJ4105, KICS4105
Mathematical reasoning underpins most aspects of Computer Science. By mastering essential mathematical methods, techniques, and abstract reasoning skills, you’ll be equipped to tackle complex problems and analyse data effectively. Using real-world, applied examples that bring theory to life, you’ll explore a range of topics starting from algebra, reasoning and proof, set theory, functions, statistics, and computer arithmetic. These foundational concepts will pave the way to explore more advanced topics like matrices, vectors, differential calculus, and probability. Computing opens a world of exciting possibilities! We use a variety of physical, digital, and virtual interfaces every day. How many of these do we find easy, effortless, and a pleasure to use? How many of these do we find frustrating to use? Some user interfaces are well designed and provide a good user experience, but many interfaces are poorly designed. Throughout this module, you will learn about the quality of design and the need for a professional, integrated, and user-centred approach to interface design and development. You will explore a variety of analysis and design methods and understand what good interaction design is, and how to design easy to use, effective, and efficient interfaces. You will learn about different design principles and how to use these principles to optimise the interaction between humans and computers. You will master the fundamental skills of user experience (UX) design and are likely to find yourself automatically analysing designs and spotting usability problems.nnModule Code: KICJ4102, KICS4102
We use large scale web applications every day in our lives. How much do we understand about how they are structured, deployed and about how they operate? As developers, every year web development technologies and frameworks change, and new ones are proposed. How do we evaluate what these really provides, cutting through the marketing hype? In this module you will examine the fundamental technologies that make modern web applications work: learn to use of operating and cloud systems to deploy, configure, and monitor software deployments; dive into networking from the basic principles of network latency and bandwidth to addressing and transmission at different layers from the datalink to the HTTP application layer. Then you will develop a foundational frontend web development skillset, learning how to structure web pages using HTML and style them using CSS, and develop interactive web pages using JavaScript. Our lives are completely dependent on the correct operation of software: health-care systems, banking, University student data systems, web search, and so on. Writing code is relatively easy, but writing code accurately and well requires the ability to problem solve and understand how the code we write is often just a small part of a bigger system. In this module you will learn how an object-oriented approach to software development allows us to think in a particular way about solving problems. This approach increases the likelihood that our code will be well written and reliable.
