International Foundation Year in Computing and Engineering
Course Overview
Students are introduced to fundamental concepts, theories and principles while gaining practical experience in areas such as programming, applied data analysis and digital technologies. The programme also strengthens English language, academic, digital and professional skills, helping students adapt confidently to a UK higher education environment. Successful completion provides the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to progress to a range of computing and engineering degree programmes.
Students require separate visas for their pathway programme and subsequent degree studies.

Course modules
This module develops your English and academic skills. It builds the reading, listening, writing and speaking skills needed for academic study helping you to participate effectively in lectures, seminars, group work and assessment tasks. The module also aims to develop your confidence in English communication so you can take part in local and university-wide activities. (40 credits)
This module focuses on developing essential professional skills including teamwork, communication, research skills, planning and time management, preparing students for both academic and industry environments. Students work in interdisciplinary groups to solve a problem that can be explored from different subject perspectives and students explore common challenges in project work and build skills to work effectively in diverse teams. The module encourages students to consider ethical, social, legal and sustainability issues faced in real-world projects and allows them to bring together subject knowledge gained elsewhere on their programme. (20 credits)
This module introduces you to data collection methods as well as essential mathematical and data analysis skills. You are given practical experience in interpreting and presenting data using digital tools and software such as Excel. (20 credits)

This module provides foundational knowledge and practical skills in computing as well as develop logical and computational thinking. The module looks at hardware and software components, developing, testing, and debugging algorithms, and applying core programming constructs such as selection, iteration, and functions. This module helps prepare you for your degree by focussing on essential programming and problem-solving skills.
This module provides the essential mathematical foundation required for computing and engineering disciplines. It supports the development of core quantitative skills and knowledge necessary for problem-solving and analysis in technical contexts. The module gives you practice in using mathematical methods and how to show clear reasoning.
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to physics concepts, theories and principles that underpin study in engineering. You will gain practical skills in carrying out experiments and evaluating your results and it will help you build analytical skills necessary for your degree.
