International Year One in Computing
Course Overview
Designed for students progressing to Computer Science, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, or Software Engineering, the programme develops core knowledge and skills in mathematical reasoning, computational thinking and programming. Students apply these skills in areas such as data analysis and web development gaining analytical, communication and project-management skills that support success in higher education and future careers in the digital sector. The programme culminates in a software development project that integrates analysis, design, implementation and testing, providing a strong foundation for further study in computing.

Course modules
This module This module develops the academic English language, communication and study skills required for successful participation in undergraduate business programmes at Sheffield Hallam University. It supports your transition into UK higher education by building confidence and competence in academic reading, writing, speaking and listening within a business and management context. nnThe module is designed to run alongside core business modules and is fully contextualised to your specialist studies. You will develop the academic conventions, language accuracy and critical skills required to engage with business texts, contribute to seminars, produce written coursework and deliver presentations aligned to Level 4 expectations. (20 credits)
This module provides students with the opportunity to design, develop and evaluate a small-scale software solution through a structured and supported project experience. Students work individually and in teams to analyse a problem brief, apply appropriate software development techniques, and produce a functioning solution accompanied by clear technical documentation and reflection. Legal, Social, Ethical and Professional Issues (LSEPI) and their impact within the IT and software industry are also considered. n n The module is designed specifically for International Year One students transitioning into undergraduate UK HE study. Teaching and learning are scaffolded to support the development of project literacy, teamwork, problem-solving and professional practice within a supportive learning environment. This module is aligned with the Sheffield Hallam University Level 4 module Software Projects in terms of learning intent and outcomes. It has been pedagogically adapted for IY1 delivery through reduced credit weighting while maintaining parity of standards. (40 credits)
This module introduces the core mathematical ideas that underpin Level 4 study in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. It develops students’ confidence in discrete mathematics, basic numerical and algebraic skills, and mathematical reasoning used to model and solve computing problems. The module emphasises practical application of mathematical tools to topics such as algorithms, data structures, security-aware thinking (e.g., cryptography fundamentals), and data representation, supporting progression into programming, databases/web and software project work. (20 credits)
This module develops your understanding of how people, culture and inclusion shape contemporary organisations operating in local, national and global contexts. It equips you with the knowledge and insight required to engage effectively with a diverse workforce and to understand the responsibilities of organisations in creating inclusive and productive working environments. Through applied activities and a simulated international collaboration, you will develop awareness of cultural difference and the practical challenges of working across cultures.
This module provides a structured and supported introduction to computer programming. You will develop foundational programming knowledge and practical skills through the design and implementation of simple programs and algorithms using a mainstream programming language and introductory concepts of object-oriented programming. n n The module acknowledges the diverse educational backgrounds and programming experience of International Year One students and is aligned to the Sheffield Hallam University Level 4 module Programming for Computer Science. Teaching and learning are scaffolded to support the transition into UK higher education, enabling students to develop confidence in problem-solving, logical thinking, and technical communication alongside core programming competence. (20 credits)
This module introduces students to the foundations of modern web-based applications through the integrated study of web technologies and database systems. Learners will develop the technical skills required to design, implement and document database-driven web applications, while gaining confidence in applying theory to practice. n n This module is aligned to the Sheffield Hallam University Level 4 module Databases and the Web in terms of content and learning outcomes, while being pedagogically adapted for International Year One delivery. The module emphasises scaffolded learning, applied practice and technical communication to support student transition into undergraduate Computer Science study. (20 credits)
