BSc (Hons) Software Engineering
Course Overview
Software engineering focuses on the structured design, development and maintenance of complex software systems used across modern industries. This course combines programming knowledge with an engineering approach to problem-solving, helping you understand how reliable and scalable software is created in professional environments.
Throughout the programme, you will develop technical and analytical skills, including:
- Developing software using modern programming languages and tools
- Understanding software design, quality assurance and system architecture
- Applying engineering principles to solve complex real-world problems
With a strong emphasis on practical application and industry-relevant skills, the course prepares you for careers in software development and the wider technology sector.
Work Placement Information
A work placement year is an optional part of your degree and is normally completed during your studies, before your final year. If you are interested in undertaking a placement, you should discuss this with your Course Director once you start your degree programme. Please note that you will need to apply for a visa extension and pay an additional placement year tuition fee. Details of placement year fees can be found on the Ulster University International Tuition Fees page.

Fees are not inclusive of scholarships. Stated fees are for the study preparation pathway programme only and do not include tuition applicable to the degree courses continued at the university. All pathway fees are subject to annual review and may increase in line with policy, inflation, or regulatory changes.
Payment of Pathway Study Tuition Fees Your offer letter shows an initial fee that confirms your place on your chosen study preparation course and a link to Flywire so that you can make a secure payment. This initial fee is an instalment towards the overall cost of tuition fees for your study preparation course and includes a one-time non-refundable administration fee. After your CAS Letter has been issued, and before arrival or registration, you must pay your remaining first-year tuition fees in full. Admin Fee: All applications are subject to a non-refundable admin Fee of £220 (increasing to £225 from 1st September 2026).
